For more than forty years, the United Arab Muslim Association and the wider Greenacre community have called the current mosque home. Since its establishment, the mosque has served as a place of worship, learning, guidance, and community connection for generations of Muslims across Sydney. As the Muslim population in Greenacre and the surrounding suburbs continues to grow rapidly, the need for a larger, modern, and purpose-built Islamic centre redevelopment has become increasingly important. After decades of continuous service to the community, this long-awaited redevelopment of the Greenacre Grand Mosque will ensure the mosque can continue to serve future generations for many years to come.
The new Greenacre Grand Mosque redevelopment is envisioned to become one of the largest and most significant mosque complexes in Sydney, spanning approximately 2,600 square metres. Inspired by traditional Islamic architecture while embracing modern functionality, the design of the Khaled Ibn Al-Walid Mosque will be centred around the iconic eight-point Islamic star, a timeless symbol of unity, balance, knowledge, and faith within Islamic civilisation. The architectural form will create a striking landmark for Greenacre while preserving the spiritual identity and heritage of the mosque.
The redevelopment will include a large main prayer hall capable of accommodating thousands of worshippers, dedicated prayer spaces for women, educational classrooms, lecture and seminar spaces, a library, community gathering areas, offices, meeting rooms, modern wudu and amenities facilities, landscaped courtyards, and a multi-level car park to support the growing number of attendees. The mosque complex will also include dedicated funeral preparation facilities for the washing and preparation of deceased Muslims in accordance with Islamic tradition and dignity, helping families during some of the most difficult moments in life.
A major feature of the redevelopment will be a dedicated two-storey education and community services building designed to support the religious, social, and family needs of the Muslim community. The facility will host Islamic classes, youth programs, counselling services, marriage and family support, and community guidance initiatives addressing important issues affecting Muslims today, including family conflict, divorce support, youth challenges, and social wellbeing. The vision is for the mosque to serve not only as a place of worship, but as a centre for education, support, and positive community development.
Beyond being a place of prayer, the new mosque aims to become a centre of guidance, knowledge, service, and community leadership. The redevelopment reflects the vision of creating a welcoming environment for all people regardless of background, while continuing the legacy established by the pioneers who first built the mosque decades ago. It will stand as a symbol of faith, contribution, and unity, serving not only the Muslim community of Greenacre but also contributing positively to the social fabric of Sydney and Australia as a whole.

The existing Khaled Ibn Al-Walid Mosque has served as a place of worship and community service for over forty years and will continue to operate until the Islamic centre redevelopment is complete with the new Greenacre Grand Mosque complex. It features prayer areas for men and women, wudu facilities, and administrative offices. This building remains a vital part of the mosque’s enduring legacy of sincerity, unity, and service to Allah.

We have completed the community hall level of the Greenacre Grand Mosque and are currently progressing with the construction of the second slab, a 2,600m² level that will form the main prayer space for the Khaled Ibn Al-Walid Mosque as part of the ongoing Islamic centre redevelopment.

The next stage of construction for the Greenacre Grand Mosque includes the mezzanine level designated for the women’s prayer area, followed by the construction of the mosque dome and the two minarets, along with the main access stairs to the prayer hall. After this, work will continue on the Islamic centre redevelopment, which encompasses the multi-level car park, the dedicated facility for washing of the dead, and the finalisation of the office and educational spaces within the broader complex of the Khaled Ibn Al-Walid Mosque.

It is difficult to provide an exact completion date for the Greenacre Grand Mosque redevelopment due to the scale and complexity of the project. However, we are currently aiming for an estimated completion timeframe of the next 2–3 years. As this is a major mosque development, including the Khaled Ibn Al-Walid Mosque, each stage requires careful planning and construction to ensure it is built to the highest standard for generations to come.
